It is a sensible question, and you will not get a pushy answer here.
Plenty of businesses are thinking exactly this: it is early days, most of my customers still phone or walk in, so why spend money on it now?
Fair enough. Here is the honest version, including the times we would tell you to leave it.
You are right that it is early
Most South Africans are not yet booking a plumber or a salon appointment through an AI assistant. Anyone telling you they are is exaggerating.
What is changing is smaller than that, and more specific. People are getting into the habit of asking their phone to sort something out instead of going and looking themselves. It is happening faster with younger customers, and faster in the cities, but it is spreading, and it does not look like it is going backwards.
So: early, yes. Not happening, no.
When we would tell you to wait
If your website is not up to date. If your prices, hours or services are wrong or missing on your own website, connecting AI to it will not help. Fix that first. Most of it costs nothing and it helps you either way.
If you are already as busy as you can handle. If you cannot take on more work right now, more enquiries is not a gift. Sort out the capacity first.
If your customers all come by word of mouth. Some businesses run almost entirely on referrals and regulars. If nearly everyone who walks in already knows someone who sent them, this matters much less to you.
If one of those is you, wait. We would rather tell you that than take your money.
What waiting actually costs
If none of those apply, here is what waiting costs, and it is probably not what you expect.
It is not the customers you miss in the meantime. There are not that many yet.
It is the head start. The setting-up part is quick. The useful part is the few months afterwards, where you find out what your customers actually ask, what needs tightening, and what you would do differently. Everyone goes through that. Whoever starts sooner gets through it sooner, and you cannot skip it by paying more later.
And it is work you would want to do anyway. Getting your real hours, prices and services properly onto your website helps you today. It helps people find you on Google. It just also happens to be what makes the AI part possible.
When waiting starts to cost you
Three things worth watching:
1. Most of your customers find you, rather than being sent to you. Then you depend on being found, and one of the ways people find things is changing. 2. Someone else in your line of work is already set up for it. Being the second one is harder than being the first. 3. Your customers are younger, or in the city, or mostly on their phones. That is where the habit is forming fastest.
If two of those sound like you, “wait and see” is not really waiting. It is deciding.
Starting does not have to be a big thing
A lot of the hesitation comes from imagining this as a big expensive project.
It does not have to be. You can start with one thing, usually whatever is annoying you most, like missing after-hours enquiries or spending your afternoons on booking phone calls. One thing, on the website you already have. You can add more later, or not. You can stop.
You are not signing up for a system. You are fixing one problem and seeing how it goes.
The bit we would actually worry about
Not being late. Being late and in a hurry.
The businesses that get this wrong are usually the ones who leave it until they feel they are falling behind, then rush, and end up making quick decisions about what an AI can say to their customers, instead of thinking it through properly.
Right now, there is no rush. That is exactly why it is a good time to think about it calmly.
An easy way to find out
You do not have to work this out on your own. Get a free AI check.
We look at your website and how your customers find you now, and tell you plainly whether this is worth doing for your business, or whether you should leave it for now and do a couple of other things first.
If our honest answer is “not yet”, that is what we will tell you, and we will say what to fix in the meantime. You keep the report either way, and there is no cost and no obligation.
Send us a WhatsApp or an email with your business name and website, and we will have a look.
