What is WebMCP?

WebMCP, explained like you’re busy

WebMCP is a new way for websites to talk to AI assistants. Instead of the AI guessing which button to press, your website hands it a neat list of things it may do, like “book an appointment” or “ask for a quote”.

The problem

AI assistants guess

Today an AI assistant reads your website a bit like a tourist reading a menu in a foreign language. It guesses. Sometimes it guesses wrong, and your customer gets sent somewhere else.

The fix

A translated menu

WebMCP gives the AI a translated menu: clear actions, clear inputs, no guessing. It can check your hours, see your services and send a booking the right way.

Who is behind it

Google and Microsoft engineers

Engineers from Google and Microsoft are building it together, in a W3C community group. It is an emerging web standard, still in trial.

How an AI assistant uses your website: your customer asks, the assistant sees your menu of actions, it uses Book appointment with the right date and time, and your customer confirms.

Where it works today

Chrome, Edge and ChatGPT Desktop already support WebMCP in trial or preview form. Firefox and Safari are discussing it. It is early, and that is the opportunity: being ready first means the AI assistants find you first.

Where WebMCP works today: Chrome preview in February 2026, Chrome 149 trial announced in May 2026, Microsoft Edge trial and ChatGPT Desktop support by September 2026, Firefox and Safari still discussing it.

How it’s different

SEO gets you found. A chatbot talks to visitors. WebMCP lets your customers’ own AI assistants get things done on your website. You can have all three.

SEO helps search engines find and rank your pages. A chatbot answers visitors on your site. MCP connects AI apps to a business's backend server. WebMCP lets AI assistants use your website's own actions safely. SEO gets you found. WebMCP gets you chosen and booked.
